The Seven Seal Judgments of the Tribulation

Continuing in the study of Revelation 6

rev 6 vs 6 black horse rider scales

Rev 6:5-6, “When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds of wheat for a day’s wages, and six pounds of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!”

Now, continuing our study, we will look at the fifth point of our outline …

V) Each of the Four Living Creatures are Represented in the 1st Four Seals.

What is their importance?

In the 3rd Seal Judgment, the 3rd Living Creature under the command and authority of Jesus Christ calls forth the 3rd Horsemen to carry out this Judgment. Rev 6:5

Rev 6:5, “When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.”

To identify which Living Creature is in view, we go to the listed order found in Rev 4.

In Rev 4:6, They are the Zoa ” … the Living Creatures, in the center and around the throne (of God).”

Rev 4:7 “…and the third creature had a face like that of a man …”

So, with confidence, we note that the 3rd Living Creature involved in the 3rd Seal Judgment had the likeness of a man.

These Living Creatures are six winged Seraphim Angels as described in Isaiah’s vision of God’s throne. Isa 6:1-3

Isa 6:1-3, “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his Glory.”

The word “seraphim” comes from the Hebrew as used in Isa 6:1-3 and Num 21:6 for “fiery serpents.” The root of the word, saraph means, “burnt.”

This word is used in Isa 44:19 in the promise of the restoration of Jerusalem. (Read: Verses 9-28 and note the various similarities to our 3rd Seal Judgment. Parallels like, “craftsmen, wise men, and bread.”)

Charles Ryrie notes that:  the Seraphim Angles were cleansing angels because of the relationship to Isa 6:6-13

Then back in Rev 4:8, the phrase describing the Living Creatures says, “Full of Eyes.” This speaks of the Omniscience “Wisdom” of God, which apparently was used and displayed by these Angels.

Living Creatures are also depicted in Ezek. 1:1-3:27, as the foundations to the throne of God that moves where the Holy Spirit moves and support the Sea of Glass. Of these creatures, it is said that they have only 4 wings and are Cherubim (4 winged) Angles. Whether this is a separate group or the same group prior to a later promotion is unknown. (The number of wings depicts rank among angelic beings; 0, 2, 4, and 6, as far as we know.)

Of the Man-faced Seraphim, it is said he is the leader of angelic hosts, responsible for the oversight and administration of the human race.

But more importantly each of these angels represent an aspect of the work of Christ in that:

  • Christ is the Lion of Judah emphasizing His Kingship as depicted in Matthew.
  • Christ is the Servant sacrificial calf as depicted in Mark and Heb 9:12, 19.
  • Christ is the Son of Man as depicted in
  • Christ is associated with the heavens as the Son of God as depicted in

Gen 1:26-27, “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

This Scripture gives emphasis to the Authority given to man in which Adam failed and Jesus succeeded. With assistance in the form of administration by the Living Creatures, God is working to bring mankind back to its original state of creation. God created man in His own image of perfection and perfect righteousness. Through the Word of God and the Seal Judgments, He is trying to bring man back to the state of original perfection. He is trying to redeem the whole world. Col 3:9-10

Col 3:9-10, “Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the Old Man with its evil practices, 10and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him.”

Another message we see, in the fact of the Man faced living creature being involved in this Judgment, is that Authority is in view. Man was created to be the Authority over all created things.

The first man (Adam) failed in his responsibility, but the last man (Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life) did not.

So, we see a tie in between Man and Authority. The Man faced Living Creature has authority over the administration of mankind. Man had Authority over other created animals. Man and Authority are in view.

Likewise, the Bread of life speaks to the Authority of the Word of God over Man’s souls, and the Word is the Authority in all Judgments over mankind.

So, whether it be the “Sharp Two-Edged Sword,” “Manna,” “Bead of Life,” or “Wisdom,” they all speak to the Authority over man’s soul for salvation and eternal life.

The world rejected the Authority of Jesus Christ, as seen in the 1st Seal, and here in the 3rd Seal, we again see man rejecting the Authority of Jesus Christ in the form of His Word. The world rejects the Word of God.

What is also interesting about the Man-faced Living Creature is that it, (As does Rev. 5, in the form of the Lamb as if Slain and Lineage Analogies), represents the Humanity of Jesus Christ.

This tells us that Authority was given to the Humanity of Jesus Christ, as He is the Word. Deity (God the Father) gave this Authority to a Man (Jesus Christ).

Ultimately, all of mankind can gain the Authority of the Word, because Christ gave us His Word. So, man can have the authority of the Word, given to us by Jesus Christ who received it from God the Father.

The Word’s origin is with the Deity of the Triune God, who are represented by the Father when it comes to the origin of the Word.

John 16:14-15, “He (God the Holy Spirit {G.t.H.S.}) will glorify Me (Jesus Christ {J.C.}), for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.”

The phrase “all things that the Father has are Mine,” says, for example, that the Authority of the Word of God has been given to Jesus Christ by the Father.

  • Remember the Principle, “Whoever has Authority, has the Authority to grant that Authority to someone else.” So, here we see that Jesus Christ is the One who has the Authority to grant the Word to mankind. Therefore, mankind can have the Authority over sin and their souls through the Word of God. It follows the jurisprudence chain of command.
  • This tells us that we should always respect Authority, as man should fully respect the Authority found in Christ and His word. Yet, man disrespects Christ and His word. Therefore, this Seal Judgment comes to wake man up.

We see these Principles in:

James 3:17, “But the Wisdom from above is…”

1 Cor 1:24, “But to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ (Hypostatic union in view, with emphasis on His Deity) the power of God and the Wisdom of God.”

1 Cor 1:30, “But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us Wisdom from God.”

  • So, the message here is consistent in that the Wisdom of God originates with the Trinity (with the Father in view), yet Jesus Christ (the God / Man) has been granted the Authority of God to bequeath the Word to man, based on His completed work upon the Cross.

Bequeath” means, “to give or leave by will; used especially of personal property. To hand down or transmit.”

This is demonstrated in John 6, where Jesus rightly proclaims He is the “Bread of Life.” Once He became the God/Man (Hypostatic Union = 100% God and 100% Man at the same time).

His personal property was available for all. The Mind of Christ was food for all to eat.

In John 6:1-14, we see that Jesus has authority to multiply and distribute as much of His personal property (bread – the Word) as He desires and is needed. Also read Mark 6:30-52.

He started with 5 (the number of grace) loaves of Barley, the poor man’s ration, (compare w/ Rev 6:6) and 2 (the number of division) fish. When everyone had their fill 12 (the number of perfect government, organization, and rule) baskets where gathered.

Notice in John 6:13 that only the bread fragments are counted, showing the emphasis of this passage. The bread is analogous to the Word of God.

So, we see in grace, Jesus has the authority to divide the Word of God to everyone until they eat as much as they want, and there is still plenty left over.

Then in John 6:15-21, we have another scene of Christ. Here Jesus claims the sea and walks on water. These passages strongly emphasis His Authority and in Verse 21, shows what our response to His authority should be, “willing to receive Him.

Yet, in addition to willingness comes faith, which many fail in, as seen in Mark 6:52

Mark 6:51-52, “Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished, 52for they had not gained any insight (no Wisdom) from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.”

Back in John 6:23, similar to John 6:11, the One who received authority, Jesus Christ, honor’s the One who gave Him the authority, God the Father, by “giving thanks.”

Not only are we to sit down, (John 6:10), and be willing to receive the Word, but we are to give thanks to the Givers and Providers, the Father and the Son, and we can only do this through the filling of the Holy Spirit. In John 6:26 & 27, we see this all summarized.

So, Jesus Christ’s Word and Authority are in view and are the back drop for John 6:31-71.

In John 6:51, we must “eat His flesh.” This is not a literal scenario, which would be cannibalism, which is also a sin. This phrase is symbolic. The important fact of this symbolism is that God became man. Man has flesh. God does not.

The symbol is that we need to eat the flesh of Jesus. In other Words, in faith, we must willingly receive the Authority of the Word of God found in Christ. It is interesting that we are seeing this emphasis on the humanity of Christ and His flesh in the Gospel of John, which was written to reveal Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

Luke’s Gospel emphasizes Jesus as the Son of Man, (Luke 9:10-17 has this same account).

But by no coincidence, does God do anything. He is revealing here the Man, Jesus Christ as the Son of God, which emphasizes Christ’s Deity. From Deity comes the true origin of the Word. From Jesus’ humanity comes the bequeathal of the Word.

The Word is not bequeathed to Man directly from God. If that were the only important link to man, it would leave the scenario, in man’s corrupted thinking, of eating from any potential god (Allah) as being satisfactory for salvation. (Gnosticism)

But here we have in view the uniqueness of our God. The unique plan, where salvation and the Spiritual life come through a Man who is also God. There is only one man in all of history and religion who has made that claim and that is Jesus Christ, the God/Man. So, in order for the world to understand the importance of Christ, His Authority, and His Word, His humanity and the bequeathal of the Word through Him is made clear.

Salvation is not found in any old god. It is only found in the Lord Jesus Christ, the God-Man!

Therefore, we see why the Third “Man Faced” Living Creature participates in this Judgment. The world rejected the Authority of the Word of God, bequeathed by the Son of Man, Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God; therefore, the world receives this Judgment.

VI) Each Lead Tribe of Israel Represented a Living Creature.

The Lead Tribesmen name says something about Christ and the First Four Seal Judgments.

As we noted previously in our study of the Four Living Creatures, the likeness of each of the Four Living Creatures was the Emblem on the banners of the Four Lead Tribes of Israel. These banners were used for the lead and accompanying tribes-people to know where to camp and where to assemble. Judah, Ephraim, Reuben, and Dan each had a banner that represented the Lion, Ox, Man, and Eagle, respectfully. Num 2 & 10 w/ Gen 49:9 & Duet 33:17

Since the Living Creatures are represented in the First Four Seal Judgments and tell us something about their associated Judgment, we can say with confidence that each of the Lead Tribes tell us something about the Seal Judgment they are associated with, based on their association with a Living Creature.

There is a link between the Four Living Creatures, the Four Lead Tribes of Israel, and the First Four Seal Judgments.

To gain insight as to what the Lead Tribesmen Name tells us about the Seal Judgments, we first go back to the Hebrew language. Each tribesmen name has a specific meaning in the Hebrew language. For example:

  • Judah means: Praise Yahweh
  • Ephraim means: Double Fruitfulness
  • Reuben means: Behold a Son
  • Dan means: The Judge

As we understand the meaning of the names of each of the Lead Tribes, who all represent Jesus Christ, it tells us, “Praise Yahweh of double fruitfulness (God/Man), behold a son, the Judge”.

Can you think of a better description of Jesus Christ, when it comes to the Seal Judgments?

Since we are focusing on the Third Seal Judgment to be brought onto the world during the Tribulation, we will focus on the Third Lead Tribe, Reuben’s, who had the Emblem of the Third Living Creature, the Face of a Man, on its Banner.

Reuben’s name means, “Behold a Son.”

As Scripture tells us, Jesus is a Son in two ways. He is the “Son of God“, Luke 9:35, as well as the “Son of Man“, Mat 12:40.

Luke 9:35, “Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!”

Mat 12:40, “For just as JONAH WAS THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE SEA MONSTER, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

This is also proclaimed in Mat 16:13-15.

Mat 16:13-16 …He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

  • The First Mention of “Son of God” is found in Dan 3:25, where Christ made up the fourth person in the furnace, or Mat 4:3 where Satan rightly identifies, (although with a questioning tone using the first class “if” with the Indicated Mood), the man from the wilderness, Jesus Christ, as the Son of God.

Jesus Christ is the Son of God:

  • An angel announces the coming of the Son of God to Mary. Luke 1:35
  • Possessing demons identify the person Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Mat 8:29; Luke 4:41
  • Mark, John, and Paul proclaim Jesus as the Son of God in opening their Gospels and Epistle, Mark 1:1; John 1:34; Rom 1:4 as does the entire Gospel of John.
  • Jesus proclaimed Himself to be the Son of God. Luke 22:70.
  • God the Father proclaimed Jesus Christ as His Son at the Transfiguration. Luke 9:35
  • The Roman Centurion at the Cross rightly identifies the man being crucified as the Son of God. Mat 27:54; Mark 15:39
  • The message to Thyatira proclaims Jesus Christ as the Son of God, as we will see in our study of the Fourth Seal Judgment. Rev 2:18
  • And finally, if we confess that Jesus Christ is the Son of God we will be saved. 1 John 4:14; 5:12

Jesus is the Son of Man: Mat 16:13-27; 17:9-23

Other than Stephen’s vision upon his stoning, and John’s vision of the end times, every time the phrase “Son of Man” is used in the New Testament, it is used by Jesus speaking of Himself.

It is interesting that God, angels, and man proclaim Jesus as the Son of God, yet primarily Jesus, Himself proclaims Himself as the” Son of Man.”

Apparently, Jesus is the One stressing His relationship to mankind, as a member of the human race, to further emphasize that a man had to pay the penalty for the sins of mankind, and that He was the man who would do so.

John 6:53, “So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.”

John 3:14-15, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 15so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.”

Because the man Jesus Christ completed the work of the Father on the Cross, Jesus is uniquely qualified to be Judge over mankind.

His Divine Royal Patent as the Son of God qualifies Him as Creator to Judge mankind. John 1:18, 6:46; 1 Tim 6:16; 1 John 4:12.

His Jewish Royal Patent as the Son of Man, in the line of David, qualifies Him as the Redeemer to Judge mankind. Mat 1:1

His Battlefield Royal Patent as the King of kings and Lord of lords, won at the Cross, qualifies Him to Judge mankind. Rev 19:16

John 5:27, “… and He gave Him authority to execute Judgment, because He is the Son of Man.”

The 3rd Seal represents: Worldwide Famine, scarcity of grain products.

Because the world rejected the saving Spiritual sustenance found in the “Son of God,” who is also the “Son of Man,” the world will receive this Judgment of Physical Famine. Jesus Christ, the God/Man, the Son of God, and the Son of Man is worthy to open the 3rd Seal and pour out this Judgment onto the unbelieving world in the hopes of waking up the lost in this dying world.

Let us now find out a little more about “Reuben to gain a better understanding of the 3rd Seal Judgment.

This information is what I call the fine threads of sewing a garment. To sew a garment, you have large and bold threads that hold the main weight of the garment together and you need fine interwoven threads to adorn the garment making it more beautiful.

The #3, the message to Pergamum, the Praise by Angels, the Living Creatures, the Black Horse Rider, they are all the large thread giving strength to the understanding of this Seal Judgment. Yet the threads of Hidden Manna, White Stones, the Color Black, and the Lead Tribe of Reuben are the finer threads showing us the beauty and intricacy of the Word of God and this Seal Judgment. So, let us review more of the finer things by taking a closer look at Reuben.

“Reuben” was the eldest son of Jacob/Israel born of Leah. Leah was the “ugly” sister of Rachel who was deceptively given to Jacob in marriage, by Jacob’s uncle Laban. Nobody wanted to marry Leah, so Laban had to swindle someone to betroth her. So Jacob ended up with a wife he did not want. Nevertheless, Leah was a righteous woman and pleaded to God for a son and Reuben was conceived and born.

Gen 29:32, “Leah conceived and bore a son and named him Reuben, for she said, ‘Because the LORD has seen my affliction; surely now my husband will love me.’”

In Wisdom, she sought the Lord for refuge so that her husband would love her. The Seal Judgments are brought on so the world will receive the Wisdom of God and gain the personal love of their husband, Jesus Christ.

Gen 35:22-23, “…Now there were twelve sons of Jacob—23the sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn…”

Gen 35:22, “It came about while Israel (Jacob) was dwelling in that land [Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem)], that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it.”

Reuben committed a sin against his father, and therefore received Divine Discipline of not being the heir to the Messiah. Israel heard of a sin coming from his son, versus hearing the Wisdom of God coming from his son.

Luke 9:35, “This is my Son, listen to Him.”

Jacob did not hear the words of the Lord from his son Reuben.

Gen 49:3-4, “Reuben, you are my firstborn; my might and the beginning of my strength, preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power. 4“Uncontrolled as water, you shall not have preeminence, Because you went up to your father’s bed; then you defiled it—he went up to my couch.”

His sinful conduct, referred to in Genesis 35:22, brought down upon him his dying father’s cursing in Gen 49:4.

Because of his adultery, Reuben received Divine Judgment. As a result, the blessing of the bloodline of Messiah passed from Reuben and went to Judah. Because of the world’s adultery of being married (Pergamum) to Satan’s propaganda cosmic system and sin, instead of Jesus Christ, the world receives Judgment.

In focusing on Reuben, remember, we previously noted that each Living Creature represents something about Christ, and each lead tribe of Israel tells us something about Christ.

When we combine the meaning of the tribe’s name with the Living Creatures’ representation it says:

“Praise Yahweh the King, the sacrificial servant of double fruitfulness (God/Man), behold a son of man, the Judge from the heavenly places.”

As a result, we understand that Jesus is uniquely qualified as the Son to Judge the world. Sins have been paid for at the Cross, but because the world rejected that Judgment, Christ is just in bringing these Judgments. The ugliness of sin is still on the world, as compared to Leah who gave her ugliness over to God for refuge.

Now focusing just on “Reuben’s Banner” that had the image of the 3rd Living Creature’s Face (a Man), we note that following this banner during the years Israel wandered in the wilderness was Simeon’s tribe whose name means, “to hear,” and Gad’s tribe whose name means, “good fortune”.

When we combine the meanings of their names, it tells us a little more about the 3rd Seal Judgment which is a Judgment for the rejection of the Word of God found in Jesus Christ.

Their names tell us literally, “Behold a Son to Hear, Good Fortune.”

If we expand this phrase it says, “Behold the son of man, listen to him, and you will be blessed”.

Leah listened to the Word of God and received a blessing with the birth of a son. This correlate to what the Father said at the Transfiguration in Luke 9:35.

Luke 9:35, “Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!”

Unfortunately, her son Reuben was not as diligent, lived in the world’s way and received Divine Judgment.

This is exactly what the worldly person does, and therefore the 3rd Seal Judgment is brought on to wake up those lost, so they will hopefully listen to the Words of the Son and receive eternal salvation.

So, Leah and Reuben are a type of mankind. The believer, who heeds the Word of God and gains refuge in God, is a Leah. The adulterous unbeliever, who lives in the world and rejects the Word of God, gains further punitive Divine Judgment.

Now, one last fine thread analogy. Each of the 12 Tribes of Israel were represented on the Breastplate of the High Priest by a precious stone or gem. Reuben was represented as the first tribe with the Ruby, a.k.a. Sardius (KJV), a.k.a. Carnelian. So, we note the precious stone and color of the stone to further adorn our study.

In Ex 28:17; 39:10, we have the account of the Breastplate. The 1st stone in the 1st row was the Ruby, which stood for the tribe of Reuben.

The Hebrew word for “Ruby” is אֹ֫דֶם –Odem (o’-dem). Odem is a carnelian or ruby. It is from the root word ADAM that means, “redness.” We saw this in studying “Red” in the 2nd Seal.

Funk and Wagnall’s Ency. Says, Carnelian – The blood-red varieties were greatly valued by the ancients, who produced beautiful engravings in carnelian and also used them for seals.

So, it is no wonder the stone is alluded to in this Seal Judgment.

Easton’s Bible Dictionary say, The ruby was one of the stones in the high priest’s breastplate (Exodus 28:17).

A comparison is made between the value of Wisdom and rubies in Job 28:18; Proverbs 3:15; Proverbs 8:11.

Job 28:18, (KJV) “No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of Wisdom is above rubies (pearls in NASB).”

Prov 3:15, (KJV) “She (Wisdom / Doctrine) is more precious than rubies (jewels): and all the things you can desire are not to be compared unto her.”

Prov 8:11, “For Wisdom (Doctrine) is better than rubies (jewels); and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.”

The “Ruby” also appears as a stone of the king of Tyre (Ezek. 28:13, 1-19 note vs. 17) who is a type of Satan. His Wisdom was corrupted, because of his arrogance based on what the Creator had given him.

The “Ruby” being red, may also symbolize sin or life-blood, and red is representative of wartime bloodshed, as we noted in the 2nd Seal.

Since the predominate color of this Judgment is “Black,” based on the color of the Horse Rider, it takes precedence in understanding this Judgment.

“Black” is representative of famine or pestilence.

Yet through the Tribe of Reuben, we have the image of the color “Red” from the representative breastplate stone, and therefore it brings forth some meaning.

As you recall, the previous 2nd Seal Judgment was predominate with the color Red, which indicated warfare and bloodshed.

So, because of the minor role of “Red” in the 3rd Seal noted through Reuben, and the major role of “Red” in the 2nd Seal noted by the Color of the Horse, it shows us that there is a link between the 2nd and 3rd Judgments.

As warfare and slaughter grip the earth, its results in bringing on famine, as noted by the Scarcity of Grain Products. This linkage also carries through to the 4th Seal Judgment as famine, pestilence, and wild beasts kill one-fourth of the world’s population. Rev 6:8

“Red” also indicates garments. Shades of red dye were produced from the bodies of insects, vegetables, and reddish-colored minerals. These were used to color garments. So, we again see a minor tie into the reasoning of this Judgment. God tells us to” clothe” ourselves with true Wisdom, as we saw earlier in Gen 3:21 & Ex 28:3.

Man did not clothe himself with the Wisdom of God and instead rejected it; therefore, this Judgment is brought on.

Also, remember that Isaiah used the “color red” as a symbol of the nature of sin, in Isa 1:18, which is utilizing the “Wisdom” of the world over the Wisdom of God. So, let us not be like the world and instead, use the Wisdom of God, as I taught previously in our study of the 3rd Praise of our Lord in

In that message, I told you that when the Red Sox finally win the World Series again, the world will have to stand up, including the Yankees and say, “The Red Sox are world champions.. Meaning, they are worthy of the title and have ownership of it. They are World Champs.

Just as our Lord, the Son of God and the Son of Man is worthy of ALL WISDOM, as told by “Reuben.”

VII) The Four-Fold Praise of Rev 5:13 is Related to the Seal Judgments.

Here we have a reference to one of the great Genuflex’ towards Jesus Christ.

This is also told in Phil 2:11:

Phil 2:11, “And that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the Father.”

Specifically, the 3rd Praise of Rev 5:13 is related to and tells us something about the 3rd Seal Judgment.

Rev 5:13, “And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, ‘To Him who sits on the throne (Emphasis on the Deity of Jesus Christ), and to the Lamb (Emphasis on the Humanity of Jesus Christ), be blessing and honor and Glory and dominion forever and ever.’”

One of the first things to note is that in Phil 2:11, the praise of Jesus Christ is to the Glory of the Father. In Rev 5:13, the Glory is ascribed to Jesus Christ.

This tells us that when Christ is lauded in a specific area, the Father is too and receives honor and praise at the same time. That is why I have no difficulty defining “Him who sat on the Throne” as the Deity of Christ. The Father and Son and Holy Spirit are one.

Adonay Elohenu, Adonay Echadh (The Lord is our God, the Lord is One.) Deut 6:4 – They replaced YHVH with Adonay, because in honor, they would not say the name YHVH.

When one is praised, all are praised.

“Glory” is the Greek noun Doxa – δόξα in the Nominative case (subject), Feminine, Singular and means, “Glory or of good opinion.” It means, “brightness, radiance, splendor, magnificence, fame, renown, honor, or Glory.”

And is similar to the Hebrew word Kabod, which means, “honor, Glory, riches, nobility, splendor, and majesty.”

This word refers to a higher ascription of praise than the word “Honor.”

“Glory” always has the connotation of: “honor inherent in a person, a distinction, greatness, nobility, or majesty.”

The “Glory” of God refers either to, “the sum total or to some part of His Divine Essence.”

“Glory” refers to, “the integrity of God, which is the combination of His Righteousness and Justice.” Rom 5:2

Rom 5:2, “Through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace (The Righteousness and Justice of God) in which we stand; and we exult in hope (confidence) of the Glory of God.”

Even though no one has seen God, He reveals Himself to mankind. Deut 5:24; John 1:18; 1 John 4:12

Deut 5:24, “Behold, the Lord our God has shown us His Glory and His greatness.”

Today God reveals Himself through His attributes as told in His Word. John 3:11; 1:18

John 3:11, “Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony.”

John 1:18, “No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He (Jesus Christ) has explained Him.

More specifically, “Glory” refers to, “God’s integrity, “while greatness refers to His other attributes. You cannot see the greatness of God, until you can see the Glory of God.

2 Cor 4:6, “For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the Glory of God in the face of Christ.”

Seeing the Glory of God is seeing the integrity of God through pertinent Bible Doctrine.

“Glory” is used of Jesus Christ’s Deity (Rev 4:11; 7:11-12; 19:1), and His humanity (Lamb, in 5:13).

As the God/Man, in hypostatic union, we saw the “Glory” of God in Jesus Christ.

John 1:14, “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His Glory, Glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

The revealed “Glory” of God, Jesus Christ, was dishonored on earth, Mat 27:39-44, in both His Deity (vs. 40) and His humanity (vs. 42).

Yet, the Father has and will continue to honor Him in “Glory.”

1 Peter 1:21, “Who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him Glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.”

Rom 6:4, “Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the Glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.”

Also, speaking of our resurrection in relation to Christ’s resurrection.

1 Cor 15:43, “It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in Glory;”

Rev 5:13 “To Him who sits on the throne (Deity), and to the Lamb (humanity), (the God /Man Jesus Christ in hypostatic union), be blessing and honor and Glory and dominion forever and ever.”

“Glory” is the radiance of the revealed Righteousness and Justice of God.

The world rejected the “Glory” of God found in the humanity of Jesus Christ, the bread of life; therefore, the world will receive the scarcity of bread on earth.

VIII) There is a Seven-Fold Message to the Seven Churches in Rev 2-3 that

Relate to the Seal Judgments.

Here we have seen the 3rd Message to the 3rd Church at Pergamum in Rev 2:12-17, and it relates to the 3rd Seal Judgment.

Here we will compare to the Third Seal Judgment:

  • The message about Christ.
  • The problem with the Church.
  • The promise of blessing.

We have studied this church in the past when we were studying Satan’s Enemyship, which led us to the study of Balaam in Num 22-24, and now to the study of the Tribulation Seal Judgments.

Pergamum is known as the worldly church.

  • The Message about Christ.

In Rev 2:12, we have the message about Christ and it is singular in form. Christ is said to be, “The One who has the sharp two-edged sword.”

In the Greek, it is:

ὁ ἔχων τὴν ῥομφαίαν τὴν δίστομον τὴν ὀξεῖαν

Tade legei ho echon ten romphaian ten distomon ten oxeian

Tade = “One”

Legei – Present, Active Indicative, Third Person Singular of Lego = “To say, teach, call, declare, assert, command”

Ho – Nominative, Masculine = “the”

Echon – Present, Active, Nominative of Echo = “to have and hold”

Ten – Accusative, Feminine of ho = “the”

Romphaian = “Sword”

Ten = “the”

Distomon = “two edged, double mouth as a river”

Ten = “the”

Oxeian = “Sharp, piercing, swift, quick”

Literally it reads, “The One declares, that has and holds the sword the two edged the sharp.”

Here we see a direct correlation to the 3rd Seal Judgment, in that the Bread of Life is in view in the Judgment, and the “sharp two-edged sword” is another analogy of our Lord.

In both analogies, they point to the Word of God, the mind of Jesus Christ, as being that which provides for our needs, our Spiritual sustenance, and Judges both our righteous and unrighteous acts.

Here in Rev 2:12, we have the Greek word rhomphaia – rhomphaia, which tells us of a type of sword.

Romphaia means, “a large sword,” properly, “a long Thracian javelin.”

This word is used in:

Luke 2:35; Speaking to the sword (the Word) that will pierce even Mary’s heart. In other words, she also needs a Savior, and the Word from the Savior will pierce her soul for her to make a decision, just like the rest of us.

Rev 1:16; John begins receiving the vision of the book of Revelation. Here Jesus Christ describes Himself in many ways including, “sharp two-edged sword“.

From this description, we know that He is God who has all authority, and the Sword comes out of His mouth. So we can say that the Sword is the Word of God.

Charles Ryrie notes on this passage that: “the sword is a symbol of both the truth (the Word of God) and the severity (Judgment) of the Word of God.” (Brackets – my addition)

So, from this description, we see that it is the Word of God that will Judge.

Rev 2:12; our Scripture.

Rev 2:16; Here we see the threat of Judgment against the reversionistic believer who stays in reversionism and gets involved in all sorts of occult activities.

Rev 6:8; This is the 4th Seal Judgment that we will study next.

It tells us that a Judgment will be brought against the world, where one fourth of the world’s population is killed in righteous Judgment. This Judgment is because of their rejection of Christ’s authority, peace, and sustenance, as seen in the First Three Seals and culminated in the Fourth.

Rev 19:15, 21; Here we see Christ’s 2nd Advent, where He destroys the armies of the world and establishes His Millennial reign. His word will be the basis for Judgment against the unbelieving peoples and nations and will be used to rule in the Millennium.

So, we see the word Romphaia is used (7 times in 6 contexts of Scripture), noting the Number of Spiritual Perfection and the Number of man.

It is the Word of God that is the basis for bringing about Spiritual perfection in man, and it is the Word of God that will Judge man for the rejection of Christ’s Spiritual Perfection upon the Cross.

We see in other Scriptures, similar connotations describing the Word of God as the basis for Judgment. In Heb 4:12, we have the phrase “two-edged sword,” although this sword is the machaira, not the romphaia.

The writer compares the Word of God as being even sharper than any “worldly” two-edged sword, and that the Word is what will pierce, divide, and Judge. The Word of God is that which penetrates deep into our souls, as you eat the Bead of Life, whether we believe it or not.

The Word of God is that which divides mankind, believer from unbeliever, and separates out the believer into a personal relationship of everlasting peace with God.

The Authority of Word of God will Judge the unbeliever’s deeds, to show they don’t stand up to the perfection that is Christ, and are therefore not sufficient for salvation. John 12:48; Acts 13:46; Rev 20:11-15

John 12:48, “He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who Judges him; the word I spoke is what will Judge him at the last day.”

Acts 13:46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and Judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.”

See also, Psa 149:1-9 and Prov 5:1-14 for similar usage of “two-edged sword.”

Then in 2 Thes 2:8, The Word will be used to Judge the Antichrist.

2 Thes 2:8, “Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming.”

So, we see in the description of our Lord Jesus Christ to the 3rd Church at Pergamos that His word is the “sharp two-edged sword” that provides for man’s Spiritual sustenance, and Judges those that reject His provision.

Rejection of the Word (the Bread of Life) is the basis for the 3rd Seal Judgment.

  • The Problem with the Church.

Pergamos means, “married,” and this church was wedded to some Doctrines and practices that were counter to God. Three serious problems existed at Pergamos:

1) Satan’s throne (v. 13).

This passage refers to the “mystery cults” of Babylon that set up their headquarters in Pergamos, including emperor worship that played a key role in this heathen city. Pergamum was one of the first cities of Asia to build a temple to a Roman Emperor (also on the citadel), making it a center of the cult.

Pergamum was also traditionally known for its worship of Aesculapius, (whose symbol on Pergamum’s coins was the serpent), Demeter, Athena, and Dionysus, along with Orphic elements.

The first problem we see for this church is that they were surrounded with antichrists, starting with their government leaders and going all the way down to their religious leaders. This is a sign and type of the problem mankind will face during the Tribulation.

As the Antichrist establishes global government rule, Rev 6:1-2, the False Prophet will then puff him up as being the Christ, the only one to be worshipped. Rev 13:1-18

Even though the church in Pergamum was surrounded by Satan’s evil propaganda, they maintained their faithfulness and relationship with Jesus Christ.

In Rev 2:13, their steadfastness was noted in two ways, “hold fast My name” and “did not deny My faith,” showing us through the number two that they mentally separated themselves from Satanic thinking and remained in a relationship with God.

Separation has two main objects.

  • Separation Unto God – This perpetuates your momentum inside God’s power system from metabolized Doctrine in your soul, coupled with Personal Love for God and Occupation with Jesus Christ.
  • Separation From – This should be applied to both believers and unbelievers who reside inside the cosmic system who seek to influence you to leave God’s power system.

They overtly or subvertly tempt you to leave the fellowship you have with God, i.e., walking in the light and instead join them in darkness, i.e. walking in the cosmic system. Separation from unbelievers inside the cosmic system is taught in 2 Cor 6:14 17. Separation from immoral degenerate believers inside the cosmic system is taught in 1 Cor 5:9-13. Every time you hook up with something or someone in the cosmic system, you are in partnership with the cosmic system. This is why you are given the order: “therefore come out from among them.”

There are two categories of separation from people:

  • Mental Separation.

In mental separation, there is one-way antagonism from those in the cosmic system toward you. Your volition protects you from becoming antagonistic toward them by your use of Impersonal / Unconditional Love.

In the context of Mt 10:34 38, certain loved ones or friends become involved in the cosmic system.

You have the alternatives to follow them or “take up your Cross,” which means, mental separation from them and the worldly, and follow the Lord. Mat 16:24; Mark 8:34; Lk 9:23

Their influence is so great on the believer that he is tempted by their love to join them in the cosmic system. To avoid this negative influence, the believer can maintain his correct priorities by mental preparation and separation, switching from Personal Love to Impersonal / Unconditional Love.

  • Physical Separation.

There are some cases where switching from Personal Love to Impersonal / Unconditional Love will not be enough.

  1. For example, getting false information in the local church, you must leave physically, as well as under the principle of Impersonal / Unconditional love.
  2. For example, when a woman is used as a punching bag by her husband, she should leave.
  3. For example, when the temptation to sin is too great for your soul to handle it, you need to get out of that place or situation immediately.

God would rather have your run from the temptation than to be swallowed up by it.

The most basic reason for physical separation is to avoid the compromise of Doctrine resident in the soul. Physical separation means to avoid any personal contact with a person under any circumstances. You regard that person as dead. This means severance of all relation with that person of any kind.

Physical separation is sometimes needed to maintain one’s priorities and to use your volition to remain inside God’s power system. When some form of tyranny says, “no you cannot go to church,” then physical separation is demanded.

Separation is a function accomplished only when you are inside God’s power system, walking in the light. If you are in the cosmic system, walking in the darkness, you are a part of it and are outside God’s power system.

In grace God provides you a way to separate out from the darkness. He provided the opportunity for rebound. 1 John 1:5-10

2) The Teaching of Balaam, also shown in, 2 Peter 2:1-22; Num. 25 & 31.

a) Stumbling block.

This is an enticement directed towards the people of God to get them away from true faith and sound Doctrine. It is a temptation that starts with worldly promises of wealth, power, and/or sex.

It starts as a subtle distraction and ends with outright apostasy in the soul if gone unchecked. It shows that the believer can easily be distracted away from God if he eats of empty worldly promises.

I call this “content free Doctrine.” There is no everlasting sustenance to it!

b) Eat things sacrificed to idols.

Jesus, through Paul, said it was ok to eat things sacrificed to idols, if you have the mental attitude of separation, and it does not affect young believers or unbelievers in a negative way. In other words, you can eat of it if your mind is firm in the knowledge that there are no other gods beside the God. If before, during, or after eating, your thoughts are not occupied with the idol or false god, it’s ok to eat. You can also eat of it if it doesn’t cause a younger believer or unbeliever to sin. Out of their ignorance of Bible Doctrine, they sin by judging you for eating. 1 Cor 8:1-13; 10:18-33

If your mentality or the mentality of those around you can be corrupted in anyway because of your actions, God says don’t do it. Abstain even though it is not a sin.

Unfortunately, some of the believers at Pergamum were not just eating in the physical realm. They were eating in the spiritual realm too. They were participating in the false worship of other gods with body and soul. They were taking in false Doctrine and worshipping falsely, even while they participated in a righteous church that fed them the Bread of Life.

c) Immorality.

“Immorality” – πορνεύω, porneuó (porn-yoo’-o). From PORNE; “to act the harlot, that is, (literally) indulge unlawful lust (of either sex), or (figuratively) practice idolatry:—commit (fornication).”

Thayer’s Definition:
1) To prostitute one’s body to the lust of another.

2) To give one’s self to unlawful sexual intercourse.
2a) To commit fornication.

3) Metaphorically to be given to idolatry, to worship idols.
3a) To permit one’s self to be drawn away by another into idolatry

Fornication” – 1 Cor 6:18; 1 Cor 10:8; Rev 2:14; Rev 2:20; Rev 18:2-3 (2); Rev 18:9.

Committed” – 1 Cor 10:8; Rev 18:2-3 (2); Rev 18:9.

Commit” – 1 Cor 10:8; Rev 2:14; Rev 2:20.

Commiteth” – 1 Cor 6:18.

As part of the pagan worship rituals, they whole-heartedly participated in sexual misconduct. Instead of being joined / married to the Lord they joined themselves to Satan’s counterfeit system.

So, we see that in the way of Balaam, the believer sells himself, body and soul, to the world for the price of empty and fleeting moments of happiness.

When we eat of the Cosmic System, we are rejecting the happiness found in the “Bread of Life” and embracing the pseudo happiness found in the world.

Num 31:16, “Behold, these caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, so the plague (death) was among the congregation of the LORD.”

Just as the way of Balaam led to the death of thousands in the early Jewish dispensation, so it will in the early stages of the Tribulation dispensation.

The world rejected the “Bread of Life;” therefore, the world receives the scarcity of bread, which will lead to death in the 3rd and 4th Seal Judgments.

  • The teaching of the Nicolaitans.

References to the Nicolaitans are only found in Rev 2:6, 15. NICOLAITANS are said to be a heretical group in the early church who taught immorality and idolatry. They are condemned in Rev 2:6, 15 for their practices in Ephesus and Pergamum.

Nikolaités – Νικολαϊτῶν (nik-ol-ah-ee’-tace); is made up from two words:
Nikos = “Victory/triumph/conquest.”
Laos – “A people or tribe.”

So, this group may have had as their name, “the Victory People” or “Conquering People” or “Overcoming People”.

This name in the Greek, when translated to English, is similar to the name Balaam in the Hebrew, when translated to English, which can mean, “Lord of the People” – Baal + am.

There are three schools of thought on who the Nicolaitans where, and what they stood for.

1) There could have been an individual named Nicolaus that was the head of this cult, and therefore they took on his name. (i.e. the Moonies)

There was a Nicolaus in Scripture, but he was a righteous believer and one of the first seven chosen Deacons, Acts 6:5. It is unlikely that this Nicolaus is the head of the Nicolaitans, but not impossible, as many underlings in local assemblies have lusted for the perceived power of the pulpit and have usurped the incumbent Pastor.

The New Commentary on the Whole Bible states: “The Nicolaitans may have been followers of Nicolas, one of the original seven deacons (Acts 6:5). This group was comprised of believing Christians who were antinomians (“against law”). They attempted to introduce false freedom into the church. They had reacted in the opposite direction from legalistic Judaism. Legalism was the first danger the church combated by the council of Jerusalem and by Paul in his letter to the Galatians. These Nicolaitans or followers of “Balaam” (as deduced from 2:14, 15) abused Paul’s Doctrine of the grace of God by turning it into a plea for sexual freedom (cf. 2 Pet. 2:15, 16, 19; Jude 4-11). The Nicolaitans adhered to a liberal interpretation of grace. They participated in the practices of the pagans with whom they lived—and subverted by that culture, they succumbed to Satan’s scheme”

2) They were a group that was ultra-liberal in their interpretation of Scriptures and taught freedom of immoral sins, similar to the influence Balaam had on Israel.

The Nicolaitans have been linked to the type of heresy taught by Balaam, especially the pagan feasts and orgies that they apparently propagated in the first-century church.

The same effect was produced by their doctrines as by those of Balaam, that the people were led to commit fornication and to join in idolatrous worship. They might be called “Balaamites” or “Nicolaitans,” that is, corrupters of the people.

This sect may have advocated compromise with the imperial cult to avoid persecution. Later church fathers identified them as an immoral Gnostic sect (belief in knowledge, don’t believe in the humanity of Christ).

Some early church fathers write:

Tertullian speaks of the Nicolaitans as, A branch of the Gnostic family, and in his time extinct.

Irenaeus (Adv. Haeres. i., 26) The Nicolaitans characteristic tenets were the lawfulness of promiscuous sexual intercourse with women and of eating things offered to idols.

Neander (History of the Christian Religion, as translated by Torrey, vol. i, pp. 452, 453) Numbers them with Antinomians (against law); though he expresses some doubt whether the actual existence of such a sect can be proved, and rather inclines to the opinion that the name is symbolical, and that it is used in a mystical sense, according to the usual style of the Book of Revelation, to denote corrupters or seducers of the people, like Balaam. Neander supposes that the passage relates simply to a class of persons who were in the practice of seducing Christians to participate in the sacrificial feasts of the pagans, and in the excesses which attended them—just as the Jews were led astray of old by the Moabites, Num. 25.

Bible Knowledge Commentary:  They apparently were a sect wrong in practice and in Doctrine. Compromise with worldly morality and pagan Doctrine was prevalent in the church, especially in the third century when Christianity became popular. So, compromise with pagan morality and departure from biblical faith soon corrupted the church.

3) They were a group that taught separation between clergy and laity; therefore, the name Nicolaitans, “To conquer the people.”

Wiersbe writes; John commends the Ephesians for hating the deeds of the Nicolaitans. The Gk. name “Nicolaus” means “to conquer the people.” It refers to the development of a priestly caste (clergy) in the church that throws aside the common believers. While there must be pastoral leadership in the church, there must not be a distinct “clergy” and “laity” in which the former lords it over the latter. What began as “deeds” in one church is now a settled Doctrine in another. We now have the church at Pergamum divided into “priests” and “people.”

Others have noted not to place too much emphasis on facts that cannot be substantiated in Scripture.

Mosheim (De Rebus Christian Ante. Con. section 69) says that “the questions about the Nicolaitans have difficulties which cannot be solved.”

Barnes writes:  Everything, however, in regard to the origin of this sect, and the reason of the name given to it, and the opinions which they held, is involved in great obscurity, and there is no hope of throwing light on the subject. It is generally agreed, among the writers of antiquity who have mentioned them, that they were distinguished for holding opinions which countenanced gross social indulgences. This is all that is really necessary to be known in regard to the passage before us, for this will explain the strong language of aversion and condemnation used by the Savior respecting the sect in the epistles to the Churches of Ephesus and Pergamum.

But of this group called the Nicolaitans, the term Gnostics seems to be the most applicable, as John the writer of the 7 messages to the 7 churches also wrote extensively against this group in His Gospel and Epistles.

So what is Gnosticism?

Gnosticism is not a homogeneous system of either religion or philosophy, but embraces many widely diversified sects holding opinions drawn from a great variety of sources.

Gnosticism most likely arose from a combination of Hellenizing Christianity, while mixing Judaism, Buddhism, and Near Eastern religions from Persia and India. The philosophies of Plato and Philo also influenced or conjoined with Gnosticism.

Common Hellenistic perceptions included that matter and spirit were alien to one another and had found its way into Gnosticism.

The Gnostics where a group in and around the early church that:

1) They believed Jesus Christ was God, but He only seemed or appeared to be a person, but He was not.

2) They separated material and spiritual, and therefore God could not become man. (This is also called Docetism.)

3) They therefore believed in a lesser god who created the earth and gave the law and was involved in sin, and of a greater God of redemption who was spiritual and gave wisdom. They misunderstood the meaning of “the Word” in John 1:1.

4) They propagated that “gnosis” (knowledge or wisdom) had a higher calling than faith.

5) They divided Christians into categories with one group being superior; the stress on secret teachings, which only Divine persons could comprehend. This secret knowledge was higher than the New Testament revelations. They abused such texts as, 1 Cor. 3:1-4. And a lesser group who were carnal and needed to ascend to the higher knowledge.

6) They were antinomian (The belief that moral law is not valid for a person or group.), and therefore held that immoralities were acceptable in the spiritual life. They claimed that the spiritual Christians were not responsible for what they did and could not really sin. Thus, they could act in any way they pleased without fear of discipline.

7) Salvation was a cosmic rather than a moral context; when one obtained the Wisdom, you would ascend. To be saved was to be enabled to return to the one true deity beyond this world. The knowledge through which salvation came could be enhanced by participation in rituals or through instruction, but ultimately, it was a self-discovery each Gnostic had to experience.

8) The ultimate goal of the Gnostics was to return to the absolute deity beyond matter, and to be in some sense absorbed into the deity. This also means no fleshly resurrection.

John’s “Gospel and epistles” were intended to show the error of Gnosticism. The Gospel of John – Emphasizes Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and was written especially for Christians. The epistles of John emphasize the incarnation of Christ, and the high ethical standard of the earthly life of Christ that we are to emulate.

In the first epistle of John, he writes to refute their erroneous teachings, 1 John 1:1-4; 2:4-6, 15-19, 22, 26.

In 2:18, “Antichrists” = Gnostics

So, we see that in the 7 Church Messages that Ephesus, as well as Thyatira apparently had resisted the false prophecy the Gnostics preached, Rev. 2:20-25. Thyatira having, as some speculate, used the name Jezebel to identify the false sect.

The general voice of antiquity accuses the Nicolaitans of:

  • Holding the lawfulness of eating things offered to idols.
  • Mixing in and encouraging idolatrous worship.
  • Entering into sexual immorality, abusing the grace of God.
  • Denying God to be the Creator of the world and attributing its existence to other powers as a doctrine of the Gnostics.

It would seem that the two forms of apostasy were alike, corrupt in Doctrine and in practice; for in Rev 2:6, their deeds are mentioned and in Rev. 2:15, their doctrine. They were a religious group that abused the freedom of Grace. “Sin it up tonight for you are still saved.” They did not heed the obedience of faith and righteous living God commands in His Word and desires for each of us.

So, we see from the three problems surrounding the Church at Pergamum that some of them were not purely eating from the Bread of Life as command and as a protection for their souls.

They instead were eating from Satan’s cosmic trough. A trough filled with garbage that has a destructive force upon the soul.

So, we see greater emphasis on the 3rd Seal Judgment, as a Judgment against man for not eating from the Bread of Life and instead gorging on the counterfeit food of Satan’s Cosmic Religious System.

Gal 5:13-16, “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another…”

  • The Promise of Blessing.

The next message we have to the church at Pergamum, and for us today, are the promises of blessings. Here we have three promises and each says something about the 3rd Seal Judgment.

1) Hidden Manna – Intimacy with Christ based on sharing His Word.
2) White Stone – Privileges in the eternal state.
3) New Secret Name – Identification with the person of Christ.

The first thing we need to note is the phrase in Rev 2:16, “Repent therefore or I am coming quickly and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth.”

Here we see the Judgment of God against those who go the Way of Balaam and the Nicolaitans. Just like the Judgment against Balaam brought the sword, (Num. 31:8; Josh 13:8), so will involvement in the false pseudo doctrines of Gnosticism.

Num. 31:8, “they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.”

Here we have the warning from God against those who go the way of these false doctrinal teachings. God, in Grace, is telling them to wake up, repent, which means change your thinking or better yet change your doctrine. They were eating of the wrong doctrines; filling up on Satan’s propaganda system instead of paying attention to the righteous Doctrines being taught in their church. God then tells them that if they don’t change their Doctrine, He will swiftly move in Judgment against them.

As we saw in Verse 12, we see the Sharp Two-Edge Sword of His Mouth as the basis for Judgment, or in other words, the Word of God / the “Bread of Life” is the basis for Judgment.

So, we have our parallel to the 3rd Seal Judgment in that the world did not wake up from eating false doctrines supplied by Satan’s propaganda system. In turn, the world will receive a Judgment in the physical realm of “grain scarcity” in order to demonstrate the rejection of the “Bread of Life.”

Then God says in Verse 17, “he who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

This is a reference to the Grace Apparatus for Perception, (GAP). GAP is the process of the believer taking in and metabolizing the Word of God by the power of God the Holy Spirit. God has designed an awesome plan that allows regenerated man the opportunity to understand and apply the things of God, His Word.

It is God the Holy Spirit who delivers the Word / Bible Doctrine to us and causes us to understand that Word, when we receive and believe it in faith. Bible Doctrine is the basis for our understanding of whom God is and our relationship with Him. The function of GAP then allows us to receive, store, and apply Bible Doctrine.

As we have noted previously, there are many analogies for Bible Doctrine found in Scripture, e.g., the mind of Christ, The Bread of life, oil, water. etc. For example, John 4:14.

John 4:14, “The water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

In the analogy of the “Bread of Life” that is in view in the Third Seal Judgment, we then can say that GAP is the process of the believer eating the Bread of Life.

So, God is telling us that the ones who eat of the “Bread of Life” for salvation and utilizes it for life after salvation are overcomers.

“Overcomer” is our Greek word NIKAO, which means, “victory.”

We have initial victory through faith in the Work of Christ on the Cross, resulting in our salvation. We will also have victory in life over our sin nature and the temptations of Satan’s Cosmic System, including Gnosticism, whether in its legalistic or lascivious form.

So, God begins His promise of blessing here by reminding us that we need to take in and apply Bible Doctrine, through the GAP, in order to have victory in life. And this victory is very different from the pseudo “Victory People” of the Nicolaitans, as we have seen earlier.

So, now we have the Promises of Blessings that also tell us something about the 3rd Seal Judgment.

  • Hidden Manna – Intimacy with Christ based on sharing His Word.

“Give,” Verb: Future Tense, Active Voice, Indicative Mood, First Person Singular of DIDOMIDOSO which means, “To give, grant or supply.”

There is manna yet to be given to the believer. It will be given in the eternal state.

“Hidden” is the Verb: Participle, Perfect Tense, Passive Voice, Genitive, Neuter, Singular of KRUPTOKekrummenou– κεκρυμμένου.  It is a primary verb;” to conceal (properly by covering):—hide (self), keep secret.”

Perfect Tense: Describes a process that took place in the past, with the results continuing to the present. In other words, the Word of God has been from the foundation of the world and remains a benefit to us today. John 1:1

Mat 13:34, “All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. 35This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “I WILL OPEN MY MOUTH IN PARABLES; I WILL UTTER THINGS HIDDEN SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD.”

“Manna” – What is it?

Thayer defines as:

1) The food that nourished the Israelites for 40-years in the wilderness.
2) Of the manna, was kept in the Ark of the Covenant.
3) Symbolically, that which is kept in the Heavenly Temple for the food of angels and the blessed.

Psa 78:24, “He rained down manna upon them to eat. And gave them food from heaven. 25 Man did eat the bread of angels; He sent them food in abundance.” w/ Psa 105:40

Num. 11: 8, “The people would go about and gather it and grind it between two millstones or beat it in the mortar, and boil it in the pot and make cakes with it; and its taste was as the taste of cakes baked with oil.”

Principles on Manna:

  • The Lord provided for their sustenance.
  • They had to act in gathering the provision of God.
  • They had to gather it daily.
  • If they didn’t gather it when it was available, they lost out.
  • They had to work with it in order for it to be beneficial for their nourishment.
  • They had to eat it for it to be beneficial. (So, they had to break it and eat of it.)
  • If they did not use it, it became riddled with worms (an image of Satan) and rotted.

The same goes for Bible Doctrine in your soul.

Deut 8:3, “He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.”

Neh 9:20, “You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, Your manna You did not withhold from their mouth, And You gave them water for their thirst.”

Read: John 6:41-51, 58, 63.

So, what is the “Hidden Manna” of Rev 2:17?

The “Hidden Manna” calls to mind the Manna Divinely preserved for 40+ years in a golden jar, inside the Ark of the Covenant, inside the Tabernacle. Ex. 16:33-34; Heb 9:3-4

  • In this context, Jesus was speaking of Himself as the true manna, the Bread of Life, John 6:41. He was “hidden” from the world, but revealed to the believer, John 4:32-38.
  • The manna was by Divine power preserved from corruption, so was Christ in His Hypostatic Union, preserved by the power of the Word of God and the power of God the Holy Spirit.
  • The golden jar represented the Deity of Jesus Christ. The Word of God is from the Deity of Christ, not His humanity, the Author of the Word is God. It is the thinking of God. John 1:1-14; Rom 3:9-10
  • The manna was hidden inside the Ark of the Covenant, which stood for the promise of God to redeem and save the people through the Hypostatic Union of Jesus Christ.

In Christ and His Word are contained all the promises of God.

On top of the Ark was the lid of the Mercy Seat, which spoke to the revealed righteousness and justice of God. So, we see from this picture that Jesus Christ was held by the promise of God, until it was time for Him to be revealed and leave His legacy bottled up in the Mystery Doctrine for the Church Age. Incarnate Christ was, and now the Word is the revealed righteousness and justice of God that leads us to salvation.

  • The manna in the jar was hidden from the common man, but visible to the priest, just as Christ is hidden from the unbeliever, yet very visible to the believer priest in the Church Age.
  • As an extension to the Church Age, Jesus Christ is now seated at the right hand of the Father in the tabernacle of heaven and remains hidden from the sight of man in bodily form. At His 2nd Advent, He will once again be visible to all of mankind and will tabernacle among them.

Jesus Christ is the ark, the rod, the testimony, and the manna. If you partake of His grace, all of those things will be revealed to you and be yours in their Spiritual meaning and perfection.

The “Hidden Manna” is:

  • The person of the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • The true Doctrines of the Word of God, in contrast with, the “meats offered to idols” (2:14), which are the false Doctrines of Satan’s propaganda cosmic system.
  • It is the Flesh / Doctrines that we all must eat of.

Tim Lahaye in Revelation Unveiled, pg. 64, says of the hidden manna, “this is an individual feeding, not a church function. Just as the Israelites had to go individually and gather the manna in the desert, so the child of God in the Pergamum Church Age or in any Church Age is dependent on God for his or her individual Spiritual supply.”

Phil 4:19, “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in Glory in Christ Jesus.”

  • The special, intimate, access to the Person of Christ during His millennial reign and throughout all of eternity that is given only to the overcomer or winner believer. (Future Tense of DIDOMI – “will be given”)

This is a similar analogy to the Mystery Doctrines of the Church Age.

Mark 4:11, “And He (J.C.) was saying to them, ‘To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but those who are outside get everything in parables.’”

The word mystery speaks to things that were once secret and hidden, but now are plainly revealed and understood.

A parable means to use comparisons, symbols, and types, which have a sense of hiding.

The believer gets it straightforward. The unbeliever needs a simpler less direct approach.

For example, Paul explains forthwith to believers one of the parables that Christ taught the unbelievers in John 15.

Rom 11:24-25, “For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree? 25For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery—so that you will not be wise in your own estimation—that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.”

Rom 16:25-26, “Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, 26but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith.”

In addition, our Lord spoke in parables to fulfill prophecy that states, due to an individual’s lack of faith, they will not understand the Word of God, yet for the one who has faith, all things will be revealed and understood. Mat 13:10-23, 34-35

1 Cor 2:7, “But we speak God’s Wisdom in a mystery, the hidden Wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our Glory.”

See also: Eph 1:9; 3:3-10

Col 1:26-27, “That is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints, 27to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the Glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of Glory.”

Col 2:2b-3, “…Resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, 3in whom are hidden all the treasures of Wisdom and knowledge.”

So, the hidden manna represents the hypostatic union of Jesus Christ and His Word, which is given to us so that we can gain a greater understanding of Him. When you understand who someone is, you have the opportunity for a close intimate relationship with him or her.

The promise of “Hidden Manna” for the overcomer is a promise that we will have an even greater understanding of God and Jesus Christ when we get to heaven, which will greatly enhance our relationship with Him. We will have a close and intimate relationship with Him.

In Summary:

The Manna is called food from heaven. Ps. 78:24

In John 6:48-51, the Lord spoke of Himself as the true “Bread from Heaven” that gives eternal life, in contrast with the “Manna” of the OT.

The “Hidden Manna,” along with the “New Title,” on the “White Stone,” refers to the privilege of having intimate access to the Person of Christ during His millennial reign and throughout all of eternity, which will be given exclusively to the overcomer.

This is similar to other rewards for the winner believer such as:

  1. The Lord Jesus Christ will acknowledge the winner believer (homologeo) before God the Father in Heaven. 3:5
  2. The winner believer will have his name recorded in the historical record section of Heaven. 3:12
  3. The winner believer will rule with Christ during the Millennium. Rom 5:17; 8:14; 2 Tim 2:12; Rev 2:26; 3:21

Our responsibility is to learn, retain, and apply His Word, and we will be blessed. Psa 119:9-16

  • White Stone – Privileges in the Eternal State.

“White”leukos – λευκός (lyoo-kos’) = “White; shining, brilliant; dazzling.”

“White” is symbolic of purity or joy, glory, and righteousness. “White” is also representative of conquest or victory. In ancient Rome, a conquering general would ride into the city on a “White Horse.” We saw this in our study of the White Horse the Antichrist will ride.

Here we have the color associated with a “Stone,” giving specific meaning to the type of “Stone” in view, which is a reward for those who are Nikaos, (overcomers), victorious in the Spiritual life.

“Stone” – psēphon  – ψῆφον.  This is not the word Lithos (Stone) or Petra (Rock), which are used elsewhere in the New Testament.

Joseph Thayer defines this word in the literal sense as: A small worn smooth stone, a pebble.

It is a unique type of stone that is used only here and in Acts 26:10, which gives us a sense of the meaning of this word.

To better understand the meaning of the “White Stone,” we need to look at the exegesis (word study from the original languages) and isagogics (history, manners, and customs) of this word to properly categorize it.

So, we are going to note 3 meanings and applications of the “White Stone,” as it was used in the day of writing Rev 2.

  • It was used as a stone or pebble in voting for acquittal or condemnation.

Figuratively, Thayer says: “In the ancient courts of justice, the accused were condemned by black pebbles and the acquitted by white. It was also a vote, (on account of the use of pebbles being thrown into an urn when voting).”

The Complete Biblical Library states that: “Instead of being drawn into the immorality, lusts, and desires of the world, the believer will have the white stone of forgiveness and acquittal. In those times a white pebble was used to cast a vote calling for a verdict of “not guilty”. Believers’ sins are blotted out, and they become just as if they had never sinned. They will also receive a new name, which in the Bible means a new nature and a full inheritance.”

This promise of blessing is similar to that given to Israel in Isa 62:1-12.

Liddell and Scott in their Greek-English Lexicon agree with Thayer and add: “that Psephos in Latin is the word, calculus, used by Pindar and Herodotus. They say it is a pebble used for reckoning, a counter to calculate by arithmetic, and to cipher, hence to reckon exactly or accurately, an exact balance.”

Tim Lahaye, Revelation Unveiled, pg. 64, says; “The white stone stands as a beautiful symbol of the eternal acquittal we gain through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Adam Clarke writes extensively on this topic and gives examples that agree with both Thayer and Liddell and Scott. Clarke says: “It is supposed that by the white stone is meant pardon or acquaintance, and the evidence of it; and that there is an allusion here to the custom observed by Judges in ancient times, who were accustomed to give their suffrages by white and black pebbles; those who gave the former were for absolving the culprit, those who gave the latter were for his condemnation.”

In Acts 26:16, this word is used to represent Paul’s vote or voice in the condemnation of early Christians.

Acts 26:10, (NASB) “And this is just what I did in Jerusalem; not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests, but also when they were being put to death I cast my vote against them.”

Acts 26:10, (KJV) “Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.”

That is the negative aspect of a vote, yet we receive the positive aspect of God’s election. God has acquitted us from the guilt and penalty of our sins, and therefore has given us a “White Stone.”

Rom 5:1, “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Rom 8:33-34, “Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies; 34who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.”

This usage is mentioned by Ovid, full name Publius Ovidius Naso, (43 bc – ad 17?), a Roman poet who wrote Metamorphoses, lib. xv., ver. 41: DRYDEN, (1631-1700), an English poet translated this to English.

“A custom was of old, and still remains, which life or death by suffrages ordains: White stones and black within an urn are cast, The first absolve, but fate is in the last.”

  • The White Stone was used in the public games as a reward for the victor.

Adam Clarke writes: “Others suppose there is an allusion here to conquerors in the public games, who were not only conducted with great pomp into the city to which they belonged, but had a white stone given to them, with their name inscribed on it; which badge entitled them, during their whole life, to be maintained at the public expense.”

  • They were used as invitation cards giving access to public and private events.

The New Commentary on the Whole Bible, by Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown, says:
“In ancient times, white stones were given to people (with their names written on them) as invitations to special banquets. (This is similar to the practice in modern times of sending engraved invitations.)”

If this is what Jesus was alluding to, the “White Stone” with the new name could very well signify an open invitation to his wedding feast (Rev 19:9).

Rev 19:9, “Then he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’” And he said to me, ‘These are true words (manna) of God.’”

Adam Clarke noted that: “these Psephos’ were related to tesserae – tesserae among the Romans, and of these there were several kinds.”

a) There were tesserae inscribed with different kinds of things, such as provisions, garments, gold, or silver vessels, horses, mares, slaves, etc.

These were sometimes thrown by the Roman emperors among the crowd in the theatres, and he that could snatch one; and on producing it, he received that, the name of which was inscribed on it.

But from Dio Cassius it appears that: “those tesserae were small wooden balls, whereas the tesserae in general were square, whence they had their name, as having four sides, angles, or corners.”

b) Tesserae conviviales, which answered exactly to our cards of invitation or tickets of admission to a public feast or banquet; when the person invited produced his tessera he was admitted.

The mention of the hidden manna here may seem to intimate that there is a reference to these convivial tesserae, whether given to the victor in the public games, entitling him to be fed at the public expense, or to a particular friend, inviting him to a family meal or to a public banquet.

c) Tesserae frumentariae, or tickets to receive grain in the public distributions of corn; the name of the person who was to receive, and the quantum of grain; being both inscribed on this badge or ticket.

Those who did not need this public provision for themselves were permitted to sell their ticket, and the bearer was entitled to the quantum of grain mentioned on it.

d) But the most remarkable of these instruments were the: Tesserae hospitales, which were given as badges of friendship and alliance, and on which some device was engraved, as a testimony that a contract of friendship had been made between the parties.

A small oblong square piece of wood, bone, stone, or ivory, was taken and divided into two equal parts, on which each of the parties wrote his own name, and then interchanged it with the other.

This was carefully preserved, and handed down even to posterity in the same family; and by producing this when they traveled, it gave a mutual claim to the bearers of kind reception and hospitable entertainment at each other’s houses.

Of the Tesserae Clarke states:

  • The word yhfov does not necessarily signify a stone of any kind, but a suffrage, sentence, decisive vote; and in this place seems answerable to thetessera –  tessera. Thetessera – tessera which Hanno had, he tells us in his Punic language, was inscribed with the image or name of his god.
  • The person who held it had a right to entertainment in the house of him who originally gave it; for it was in reference to this that the friendly contract was made.
  • The names of the contracting persons, or some device, were written on the tessera, which commemorated the friendly contract; and as the parts were interchanged, none could know that name or device, or the reason of the contract, but he who received it.
  • This, when produced, gave the bearer a right to the offices of hospitality; he was accommodated with food, lodging, etc., as far as these were necessary; and to this the eating of the hidden manna may refer.

So, what does this say related to our relationship with Christ?

  • The believer is and will be taken into an intimate relationship with the person of Jesus Christ.
  • We have a contract for our eternal salvation by a special token and seal to which God has support to His claim and ownership of us. Eph 1:14

Eph 1:13b-14, “…You were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His Glory.”

As such, we can claim the Bread and Water of Life; the Hidden Manna, as well as every grace of the Spirit of God, the Tree of Life, Immortality, and the final glorification of our body and soul throughout eternity.

  • At the same time, we acquire a New Name; the name of a child of God based on the sealing ministry of God the Holy Spirit and the tesserae, which we receive with our new name.
  • On receiving the Tessera we can claim sustenance, support, grace, Glory and all the privileges of heaven.

The Tessera is a Divine witness of our acquittal and acceptance.

As a sided note:  The following summarizes a statement in the TDNT 9:607.

(The verb of our word Psephos is Psephizo, which means to count and calculate. It is used in Rev 13:18 to identify the “wise” who figure out who the Antichrist is and his mark.)

Rev 13:18, “Here is Wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast …”

Then in Rev 17:11, it tells us more about the “Antichrist.”

Rev 17:11, “The beast which was and is not, is himself also an eighth and is one of the seven, and he goes to destruction.”

Well 666 is the sum of 1 to 36. So, 36 is the number for calculation. To calculate 36, you sum 1 to 8. Eight, known as the ogdoad, is the special number of wisdom for the Gnostic cult. So, if this holds true, the Antichrist will be a special proponent of the Gnostic beliefs.

As we have seen in our study of Pergamum, Gnosticism was a major challenge warned against. In contrast to their beliefs, the overcomer in Christ, the one who eats of the true manna, will receive a special reward identifying or counting them as Christ’s, acquitted from their sins and made righteous.

It is most likely no coincidence that Christ used the imagery of the “White Stone” –  “Psephos” to compare and contrast the Wisdom of Gnosticism to the true Wisdom of the Manna, Bread of Life. He also may have used it so that even the unbeliever could understand the promise and have a chance to receive true Wisdom found in Him for eternal life.

Pastor R.B. Thieme Jr. states of the White Stone with a new name written on it; “It is a new knighthood and eternal order of chivalry that belongs to the believer winning this award.” Rev 2:17 cf. Col 3:4,6

Col 3:4, “When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in Glory.”

A new order of chivalry includes a new title after your name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. The new knighthood is given to the winner.

Rev 2:17, “To the winner, I will give him blessing [escrow blessings] from the hidden manna [Bible Doctrine in the soul]; also I will give him a white pebble [the resurrection body, God’s final vote of justification they voted with colored pebbles in the ancient world] and on that white pebble has been inscribed a new title [your royal patent in the eternal heraldry of knighthood] which no one knows [you are an anonymous hero during the Church Age] except the one who receives it.”

  • New Secret Name – Identification with the Person of Christ.

Rev 2:17, “…and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.”

“New”Kainos, καινός (kahee-nos’) Adjective: “New, recently made, fresh, recent, unused, unworn, of a new kind, unprecedented, novel, uncommon, unheard of.”

“Name”Onoma, ὄνομα (on’-om-ah) Noun: “A name, authority, cause; title; person; power; status, category, reputation.” (Mk 6:14; Rev 3:1)

“Written”Graphó, γράφω (graf’-o) Verb: Perfect, Passive, Participle: “To “grave,” especially to write; figuratively to describe, written.”

“No one”OudiesOida, οἶδας – Cardinal Pronoun: “No one, no man/woman.” Ouk + Eis = “not one.”

“Knows”Eidó, οἶδα, (i’-do) – Verb: Perfect, Active, Indicative, Third Person, Singular:
“To have seen or perceived, hence to know, appreciate.”

“Receives”–  Lambanó, λαμβάνω (lam-ban’-o): Verb: Present, Active, Participle- Nominative: To take, receive, accept the Recipient.”

The Old Testament associated change of name with a promise (e.g., Gen 17:5, 15, Abraham and Sarah). So, the new name we receive is another promise of eternal blessings.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary says of the new name: “The stone’s inscription which gives the believer “a new name,” indicates acceptance by God and his title to Glory (The Greek Testament, Alford, 4:572). This may be an allusion to the Old Testament practice of the high priest wearing 12 stones on his breastplate with the names of the 12 tribes of Israel inscribed on it. Though believers at Pergamum may not have had precious stones or gems of this world, they had what is far more important, acceptance by Christ Himself and assurance of infinite blessings to come. Taken as a whole, the message to the church in Pergamum is a warning against compromise in morals or teaching and against deviating from the purity of Doctrine required of Christians.”

We also see in Ex 28:9-12, the Ephod that the High Priest Aaron adorned. It had two onyx stones (white and black in color) on the shoulder piece. The stones were engraved with the names of the tribes of Israel. Verse 12 says, these are “stones of memorial”. I believe this is an allusion to the White Stone we will receive in the eternal state. The stone will be a memorial to the fact that we ate the Bread of Life (Word of God) while here on earth, and now have intimate access to the Hidden Manna of Jesus Christ in heaven.

Barnes, Notes on the New Testament, says of the new name: “The allusion is to the fact that Christians are said to be kings and priests to God, and that as the Jewish high priest had a mitre or turban, on the front of which was a plate of gold inscribed “Holiness to the Lord,” so they who were kings and priests under the Christian dispensation would have that by which they would be known, but that, instead of a plate of gold, they would have a pellucid (transparent and understandable) stone, on which the name of the Savior would be engraved as a token of his favor.”

The name written on this stone would be designed also as a token or pledge of his favor—as a name engraved on a signet or seal would be a pledge to him who received it of friendship. It would be not merely a white stone—Emblematic of favor and approval—but it would be so marked as to indicate its origin, with the name of the giver on it. This would appropriately denote, when explained, that the victor Christian would receive a token of the Redeemer’s favor, as if his name were engraved on a stone, and given to him as a pledge of his friendship; that is, that he would be as certain of his favor as if he had such a stone. In other words, the victor would be assured from the Redeemer, who distributes rewards, that his welfare would be secure.

The meaning then probably is, that to the true Christian—the victor over sin—there is given some pledge of the Divine favor, which has to him all the effect of assurance, and which others do not perceive or understand. This consists of favors shown directly to the soul—the evidence of pardoned sin; joy in the Holy Spirit; peace with God; clear views of the Savior; the possession of a spirit which is properly that of Christ, and which is the gift of God to the soul. The true Christian understands this; the world perceives it not. The Christian receives it as a pledge of the Divine favor and as an evidence that he will be saved; to the world, that on which he relies seems to be enthusiasm, fanaticism, or delusion. The Christian bears it about with him as he would a precious stone given to him by his Redeemer, and on which the name of his Redeemer is engraved, as a pledge that he is accepted of God, and that the rewards of heaven shall be his; the world does not understand it, or attaches no value to it.

“And in the stone a new name written”—A name indicating a new relation, new hopes and triumphs. Probably the name here referred to is the name of the Redeemer, or the name Christian, or some such appellation. It would be some name which he would understand and appreciate, and which would be a pledge of acceptance.

“Which no man knoweth”—That is, no one would understand its importance, as no one but the Christian estimates the value of that on which he relics, as the pledge of his Redeemer’s love.

So, we see that some believe the name written on the stone is a new name for Jesus Christ. In this sense, wherever we would go in the eternal state, we would have the insignia of Jesus Christ with us and always be accepted and provided for.

The word “name” is used hundreds of times in the Bible, yet the first time it’s used in the New Testament, it is used to reveal the hidden son, Jesus / Immanuel. Mat 1:21, 23

Mat 1:21, 23, “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins… 23“BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.”

Yet, the phrase “new name” is used only three times in the Bible. Isa 62:2; Rev 2:17 & 3:12.

Isa 62:2 is the First Mention of the phrase, and speaks of the blessings Jerusalem will receive at our Lord’s 2nd Coming. As we have noted before, Jerusalem is a macrocosm of the believer of the Church Age Dispensation.

As stated above, the entire passage of Isa 62 draws striking parallels to the message to the 3rd Church at Pergamum.

The Second Mention is in regards to the reward of the Church Age believer, in relation to intimate access to our Lord Jesus Christ and His eternal provisions for us. Rev 2:17

The Third Mention is again a reward for the believer. Here we see the culmination of the New Jerusalem and the new name of Jesus Christ coming together for the eternal reward of identification with Jesus Christ. Rev 3:12

Again, the “Number Three” is in view, speaking of the Divine perfection the NIKAO / overcomer receives in the eternal state, including the Divinely perfect eternal relationship and sustenance.

Isa 56:5, “To them I will give in My house and within My walls a memorial, and a name better than that of sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name which will not be cut off.” w/ Isa 65:11-16

As noted above, Pastor R.B. Thieme Jr. states of the White Stone with a new name written on it; “It is a new knighthood and eternal order of chivalry that belongs to the believer winning this award, Rev 2:17; Col 3:1-11.”

A new order of chivalry includes a new title after your name in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Rev 3:5 The new knighthood is given to the winner.

Rev 2:17, “To the winner, I will give him blessing [Escrow Blessings] from the hidden manna [Bible Doctrine in the soul.]; also I will give him a white pebble [The resurrection body, God’s final vote of justification; they voted with colored pebbles in the ancient world.] and on that white pebble has been inscribed a new title [Your royal patent in the eternal heraldry of knighthood.] which no one knows [You are an anonymous hero during the Church Age.] except the one who receives it.”

And finally, in Rev 19:11-16, we see the “New Name” as the culmination of our Lord’s 2nd Coming when He, along with us, will be revealed to the earth once again. Upon His return, we see striking illustrations tied back to both Isa 62 and Rev 2 & 3.

Phil 2:9-11, “For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the Father.”

So, we see within the 3 Promises of Blessings, (Hidden Manna, White Stone, New Name), that there awaits for us additional thoughts of God, access and privileges and eternal identification with the person of our Lord Jesus Christ. All of these added together tell us that we will have a close intimate relationship with Him where God provides for our every need for all of eternity.

These promises are a direct contrast to what the unbeliever will receive in their eternal state of condemnation. They will not receive the further thinking of our Lord. They will not receive access to and privileges in heaven. They will not be identified with the Lord. They will be removed from Him. Mat 13:36-50; 22:13; 25:30

Rev 20:15, “And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”

So, that is the basis for the warning in the 3rd Seal Judgment. By placing a famine on grain products during the Tribulation, Rev 6:6, God desires for unbelieving man to learn that, “MAN DOES NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.” Deut 8:3; Mat 4:4

And in the 3rd Message to the 3rd Church, God provides 3 Promises to the victor believer. He provides them eternal bread and sustenance, because they ate from the Bread of Life, John 6:32-41, while here on earth.

So, as we close our study of: The Message to the Church at Pergamum in Revelation 2:12-17 Related to the Third Seal Judgment of Revelation 6:5-6, let’s summarize the warning to the world through these two passages.

The First Message is a message identifying and describing Jesus Christ.

  • Message about Christ

It says that He is, “The One who has the sharp two-edged sword,” (Vs. 12).
This sword is the large Romphia, which was used in Warfare and Judgment. This is also an analogy for the Word of God. This tells us that the Word of God is that which brings Judgment for blessing and punishment (two edges). The Word is that which pierces, divides, and judges man and angels. Because the world rejects His Word for both blessing and discipline, the world receives the scarcity of grain products to wake them up.

Mat 4:4, “For man does not live on bread alone but by every word the proceeds out of the mouth of God.”

Then we have the Second Message, which tells of the three problems the church was having.

  • Three Problems.

1) Satan’s Throne (Vs. 13).

2) Way of Balaam (Vs. 14).

  1. a) Stumbling block = Religious enticements, grieving the Spirit.
  2. b) Eat things sacrificed to idols. = Placing anything before God, moral degeneracy.
  3. c) Immorality (Porneuo) = Adding immoral sexual activity to the Spiritual life, immoral degeneracy.

3) Way of the Nicolaitans “Victory People.” (Vs. 15). = All of the above with an emphasis on Gnosticism.

Here we see that some of the church members were getting involved in false Doctrines, the Word of Satan. They were wedded (Pergamum) to false Doctrines instead of Christ. They lived in the epicenter of false religions for their day and were combining false Doctrines with the truth of the Word, much as our churches do today. There was emperor worship, Zeus and other false god worship, as well as the influence of Gnosticism, which separated the clergy from the people and introduced both legalistic and liberal false “Wisdom” to the church. Ultimately, the problems entailed rejection of the true Word.

Based on the world’s rejection of the true Word, God brings famine and inflation onto the world. God will try to impress on the Tribulation generation that they should not place their trust in worldly things that are dead and cannot give life, (1 Cor 12:2; Jer. 10:14; 51:17-18), but instead place their trust in God for eternal life and sustenance.

The Third Message we noted was the promise of blessings to the overcomer.

  • Promise of Blessings

Here the Lord promises rewards for those who turn away from the false doctrines of Satan’s propaganda system (Vs. 16) and receive the true Word.

1) Hidden Manna – Eternal intimacy with Christ based on sharing His Word.

2) White Stone – Access and Privileges in the eternal state.

3) New Secret Name – Identification with the Person of Christ.

God provides three promises to the victor believer. Ultimately, He provides the believer more knowledge of Himself, the Son, and the Spirit and provides for our every need for all of eternity. This is given to us, because we ate from the Bread of Life while here on earth.

So, this is an encouragement to each of us to go forward in the Word and in our relationship with God, just as He has given us the three messages of encouragement in this passage.

Three Messages of Encouragement:

In this message, God also gave some of the believers a pat on the back and tells us all what we need to do in the Spiritual life to be overcomers, not deceived by Satan’s propaganda system. (Vs. 13) says:

1) Hold fast His Name; remain steadfast in your belief.

2) Don’t deny faith in Him or His Word, even if your physical life is at stake.

3) Change your thinking away from false Doctrines that have infiltrated your soul, and stick with the true Doctrines of the Bible, (Vs. 16).

Separation from Satan’s propaganda system, either mentally or physically, is the key to going forward in the Plan of God, with the results of glorifying God.

So, all in all, the message is the same and consistent in the Third Message to the Third Church, as is the message to the Tribulation generation in the Third Seal Judgment. We are to reject the things of this world that are purported, through Satan’s propaganda cosmic system, to give us life and continue to receive the life of God by eating of the flesh of Jesus Christ, (the Bread of Life, the Word of God), who is our true sustenance for life in time and eternity.

IX) Seven-Fold Praise by the Angels. Rev 5:12

In our study of the Seven Seal Judgments, we now turn to compare them to the Seven-fold Praise by the angels in Rev 5:12. In the Seven-fold Praise of Jesus, He is proclaimed in the 3rd praise as “Wisdom.”

So, just as we saw in comparison to the 3rd message to the 3rd church in Rev 2:12-17, where Jesus is said to be the “Sharp Two-Edged Sword” and “Hidden Manna,” we now see “Wisdom,” as another parallel analogy describing Jesus Christ.

  • Ultimately, the “Sharp Two-Edged Sword,” “Hidden Manna,” “Wisdom,” “Bread of Life,” etc. all identify the Lord Jesus Christ as the Word of God.

In comparison to the 3rd Seal Judgment, we see that the Judgment against the unbelieving world is based on the world’s rejection of Jesus Christ in the aspect of rejection of the Word of God.

We have previously noted that the Bread of Life is a picture of our Lord and His sustaining Word.

As we turn to the Seven-fold Praise by the Angels in Rev 5:12, we see this emphasized once again as the 3rd Praise says, “the Lamb is worthy to receive “Wisdom.” When you are praised for something, the ones praising you are saying, you are worthy of and have ownership to the thing you are being praised for.

For example, When the Red Sox final win the World Series again, the world will have to stand up, including the Yankees and say, “The Red Sox are world champions”. Meaning, they are worthy of the title and have ownership of it. They are World Champs.

Likewise, when the Angels, not the Anaheim ones, the heavenly ones, say to our Lord, you are worthy of all Wisdom, they are saying, “that is your title, and you have ownership of it.” In other words, Jesus Christ is worthy of the title “Wisdom” and owns all “Wisdom.” Jesus Christ is “Wisdom.”

We saw in the Number Three that Jesus is “Divine Completeness.” In the message to the church at Pergamum, He is the “Sharp Two Edge Sword” that is the “Hidden Manna” that will provide for our eternal sustenance and intimacy with Him.

So, in this praise, we once again see the basis and emphasis for His promises and our blessings. They are based on the “Word of God” which is in Christ Jesus as noted in this angelic praise, “Wisdom.”

Therefore, it is very easy for us to identify the reasoning for the 3rd Seal Judgment. Jesus Christ is the “Bread of Life” (John 6), He is “Wisdom”, and because the world rejected the Wisdom of Christ, the world receives the Third Judgment, constituted by the scarcity of grain products, i.e. bread.

In this Judgment, God is trying to wake up the lost and dying world by removing physical sustenance, grain products, in the hopes that man will realize the Only True Sustenance is found in the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ.

There will be a famine of earthly grains, because unbelieving man treated the “Bread of Life” as scarce, even though He always made Himself abundantly available. 2 Peter 1:1-12

John 10:10, “The thief (Satan) comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

Eph 3:20, “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us (the Word and the Holy Spirit) …”

What is this “Wisdom” in Rev 5:12?

First of all, it describes one of the characteristics of Jesus Christ, as noted in Rev 5:6 when it says, “He has seven horns (all powerful – Omnipotence) with seven eyes (all knowing – Omniscience).” The seven eyes tell us He is Omniscient; He has all knowledge; He is all-wise.

Secondly, it is one of the Seven Praises of our Lord that recognizes Him as being worthy to open the Seven-Sealed Scroll, which begins the Tribulation period. Rev 5:2-5.

So, we can say of Christ, because He is eminently wise, He is qualified to carry out the Judgments of the Tribulation and all of His Judgments are eminently wise. Therefore, the genius of God is displayed in the Seven Seal Judgments of the Tribulation. And it is this genius that was rejected by the unbelieving world and is brought back into view by the 3rd Seal Judgment.

We in this day also need to take heed to this warning and ensure we treat the Wisdom of God appropriately in our own lives, lest His Divine discipline fall on us, His children.

So, we note that the Greek word for “Wisdom” in Revelation 5:12 is – sophian, σοφίαν.

Sophia is a noun that means, “Wisdom, broad and full of intelligence, and is used to describe knowledge of very diverse matters.”

Sophia is used to describe God and Christ’s supreme intelligence. It is the “Wisdom” of God, as clearly demonstrated in forming and guiding the world and His Scriptures.

Sophia comes from the adjective sophos – σοφός.

Thayer’s Definition:

1) Wise or a skilled, an expert: of artificers (designer, craftsmen, inventor, etc.).
2) Wise as forming the best plans and using the best means for their execution.

It also can mean clever in matters of common life, wise, prudent, shrewd, skilled in the sciences, learned, etc.

When used in the Passive Voice, it means, “cleverly devised, wise, things too clever for man to understand.”

When used as an Adverb σοφός – Sophos means, “cleverly or wisely.”

So, Sophos comes to mean: “wise, experienced, clever, learned; skilled (builder).”

This word is used 22 times in the KJV and 20 times in the NASB.

Wise,” (21) – Matt 11:25; Matt 23:34; Luke 10:21; Rom 1:14; Rom 1:22; Rom 16:19; Rom 16:27; 1 Cor 1:19-20 (2); 1 Cor 1:26-27 (2); 1 Cor 3:10; 1 Cor 3:18-20 (4); 1 Cor 6:5; Eph 5:15; 1 Tim 1:17 (not in NASB); James 3:13; Jude 1:25 (not in NASB)

Wiser,” (1) – 1 Cor 1:25.

The First Mention of the word “Wisdom” in the Bible is found in Ex 28:3, where God gives men a “spirit of Wisdom” so that they can produce the garments of the High Priest. The Hebrew word is Chokam.

Note in the verses accompanying that “skillful men” are called to sow the garment. Their skill was based on receiving the “spirit of Wisdom.”

Just as through the Wisdom of God, you and I today become believer priests and store up for ourselves heavenly garments of the resurrection body and the uniform of Glory, Rev 3:5. To do so, we need to be skillful people through the intake and application of the Word of God.

We also see this “Wisdom” given to Solomon by God at Solomon’s request.

1 Kings 4:29, “Now God gave Solomon Wisdom and very great discernment and breadth of mind, like the sand that is on the seashore.”

The First Mention of the word “wise” in the Bible is in Gen 3:6. Here the woman sees the forbidden fruit as something that can bring Wisdom. Here the Hebrew word is Sakal.

In these verses, the woman receives the Wisdom of Satan and applies it, as we see she ate the fruit. As a result, she sows a garment of fig leaves. The “fig leaves” represent the world’s attempt to cover sins by hiding away. These garments are not acceptable to God, because they are sown from Sin. God in turn teaches Adam and the woman true Wisdom, as He slaughtered a “lamb” and gave them the lamb’s skin to cover their sins. These skins were sown in the Perfect Righteousness of God, as representative of the work of Jesus Christ on the Cross.

So, interestingly enough, we see “Wisdom” in two forms, which result in two garments to be sown. We see the Wisdom of God, which we can receive and apply that sown garments of righteousness, or we can receive and apply the Wisdom of Satan, which sows garments of sin and death. The choice is yours.

In Gen 41:8 the word “wise” is used with the Hebrew word Chakam in speaking of the wise men of the world. This is when Pharaoh had a dream and wise men could not interpret it, but Joseph did. So again, we see that “Wisdom” comes in two forms.

The two forms of Wisdom in Scripture are:

1) God’s Wisdom
2) Satan’s Wisdom.

The three applications of Wisdom in Scripture are:

1) The Wisdom that God has and applies.
2) The Wisdom that Satan has and man applies; worldly Wisdom.
3) The Wisdom of God that man can receive and apply, Divine Wisdom – Sophia and Epignosis.

Of Worldly Wisdom the Bible says:

Mat 11:25, “At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.” w/ Luke 10:21; Rom 1:14; 18-32 (vs. 22); 1 Cor 1:19-20, 26-27 (see below); 3:18-20 (see below).

Of the Wisdom of God, the Bible says:

Rom 16:25-27, “Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, (a form of the hidden manna) 26but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith; 27to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the Glory forever. Amen.”

1 Cor 1:18, “For the word of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written, “I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE.” 20Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the Wisdom of the world? 21For since in the Wisdom of God the world through its Wisdom did not come to know God, God as well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for Wisdom; 23but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness, 24but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the Wisdom of God. 25Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; 27but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, 28and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, 29so that no man may boast before God. 30But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us Wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, 31so that, just as it is written, “LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD.”

All of mankind has a choice to make. Am I going to receive the Wisdom of God or the Wisdom of Satan’s propaganda system? The angels have the same choice.

We should be choosing for God’s Wisdom on a daily basis. If you’re not choosing for God’s Wisdom, you are choosing for Satan’s.

Of choosing for Spiritual Wisdom the Bible says:

  • Principle: There are individuals who reject God’s Wisdom. We need to learn from their mistakes and accept the Wisdom of God.

Mat 23:34, “Therefore, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city.”

  • Principle: God’s desire is for us to reject the Wisdom of the world and receive His Wisdom. It is for our protection.

Rom 16:17-19, “Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissentions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. 18For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting. 19For the report of your obedience has reached to all; therefore I am rejoicing over you, but I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil.

  • Principle: Man can have the Wisdom of God by the power and filling of God the Holy Spirit. James 3:13-18; Gal 5:22-23; Eph 5:15-21

James 3:13-18, “Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of Wisdom. 14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. 15This Wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. 16For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. 17But the Wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. 18And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

Eph 5:15-21, “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, 19speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and Spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; 21and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.”

To gain the filling of the Spirit, we need to first be saved by receiving Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Believing that He died on the Cross for the forgiveness of our sins. At the moment we are saved, we are indwelt permanently with the Holy Spirit, and are filled temporarily with the Holy Spirit.

We are filled temporarily, because once saved we still have a Sin Nature, and we will sin and fall out of fellowship with God. To regain fellowship, we utilize 1 John 1:9 and are again filled with the Holy Spirit.

  • Indwelling says the Holy Spirit is in you.
  • Filling says the Holy Spirit is operational in your soul.

With both the indwelling and filling of the Holy Spirit we have opportunity to learn the Word of God and gain Spiritual IQ / Wisdom.

Job 32:8,”But it is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding.”

Rom 8:16, “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God.” 1 Cor 2:9-16; John 14:26; 16:12-14

John 14:26, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”

John 16:12-15, “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14“He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15“All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.”

We stand or fall before God based on our knowledge or ignorance of Bible Doctrine. We stand before God on the basis of Doctrine we have learned. We never stand before God in the status of ignorance of Doctrine.

Those who rejected the Wisdom of God for salvation will cower before Him in shame, as God reveals through the books of works that satanic, human wisdom is without the righteousness of God and does not gain their salvation. Rev 20:11-15

While the believer will stand before God, ready to receive the blessings He has stored up for them. As we have seen in the message to the churches in Rev 2 & 3, there are rewards and blessings for the overcomer.

Being an overcomer or not is determined by what you did with the Wisdom of God here on earth? Did you receive and apply it or did you ignore it?

Then in 1 Cor 3:10 (10-23) & 2 Cor 5:10, God tells us what the results are for the believers who used or abused the Wisdom of God. The ones who used the Wisdom of God receive blessings in the eternal state. The ones who abused the Wisdom of God suffer loss of rewards.

Our Lord gives us an example of following the world’s way of thinking vs. yielding in faith to the ministry of God the Holy Spirit. Mark 7:1-30

Col 2:8, “See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.

Eccl 2:13-14, “And I saw that Wisdom excels (is superior / surpasses) folly as light excels darkness. 14The wise man’s eyes are in his head (soul), but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I know that one fate befalls them both (physical death).”

So as always, the message is, What do you think about the Christ?” Mat 22:42. Are you thinking about Him with the Wisdom of God, or are you thinking about Him with the Wisdom of the world.

The Tribulation unbelievers will be thinking about Him with the Wisdom of the world, and God will try His hardest to change their thinking to His thinking, the Wisdom that is in Christ, for their Salvation.
